Degree Requirements
General
In order to graduate with a joint major in MMSS and another field, students must:
(i) meet the requirements for the MMSS major;
(ii) meet the requirements of another approved major; and
(iii) meet all general requirements of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.
These pages and links describe the requirements for the MMSS major and also describes the extent to which courses required for the MMSS major can be used to meet general degree requirements and requirements for the other major. It also describes special provisions for MMSS students that allow them to obtain a minor or major in mathematics in addition to the joint major in MMSS and a social science.
Note there is a specific MMSS course sequence guideline for MATH 385-0, 386-1, 386-2.
Second-year students are highly encouraged to complete the MATH 385-0, MATH 386-1, and MATH 386-2 course series in consecutive quarters. This sequence is designed to ensure that mathematical and statistical concepts are introduced progressively, with each course building directly on material from the previous one. The appropriate foundation and continuity prepares a student for success in the program’s rigorous quantitative curriculum.
Course Sequence and Timing:
Fall Quarter (Sophomore Year): MATH 385-0
Winter Quarter: MATH 386-1
Spring Quarter: MATH 386-2
Guidelines:
Sequential Order: Students are expected to take these courses in the listed order. If a student is unable to take MATH 385-0 in the fall, they are advised to wait until junior year to take the full sequence. Skipping or rearranging the sequence could make it harder to keep up or complete program requirements on time.
Mid-Sequence Entry: Students who do not complete MATH 385-0 in the fall of sophomore year should not enroll in MATH 386-1 or 386-2 that year. Instead, they should plan to complete the full sequence in their junior year.
Course Substitutions:
MATH 386-1 and 386-2: No substitutions are permitted. These courses are core components of the MMSS curriculum and must be completed as offered.
MATH 385-0: Substitutions are discouraged and will be granted only in rare cases. Requests will be considered only if the student has: (a) Completed extensive prior coursework that is clearly equivalent in content and rigor, and (b) Submitted documentation of extenuating circumstances.
